I have severe hair loss despite iron intake. How to manage?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have recently been experiencing severe hair loss. I am losing approximately 500 strands of hair per day, and sometimes the hair falls out in chunks. It even sheds when I lightly touch it.

I take good care of my hair: I shampoo regularly, oil my hair three times a week (leaving it overnight and washing it the next morning), and maintain good scalp hygiene. I do not have dandruff, itching, or lice. My scalp feels normal.

I have naturally very thin hair, but this level of hair fall is worrisome. I am currently taking Iron supplements and consuming a high-protein diet.

I would like to understand:

  1. What could be causing this sudden and severe hair loss?

  2. Is this condition reversible, and how long does recovery usually take?

  3. Are there any tests I should undergo?

  4. What treatments or products would you recommend?

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand how distressing it feels to see so much hair fall, especially when you are already taking good care of it.

Losing around 500 strands a day and noticing hair coming out in clumps usually points to a condition called telogen effluvium, which means your hair roots are prematurely shifting into the shedding phase.

This condition often develops a few weeks to months after a triggering factor such as physical or emotional stress, recent illness (including viral infections), sudden weight changes, hormonal imbalance, or nutritional deficiencies.

While you are already taking iron supplements and consuming adequate protein, other nutrients, such as vitamin D, vitamin B12, zinc, and thyroid hormone levels, play an important role in hair health. So it is important to get a blood test to check for these.

Avoid overnight oiling frequently, as it can sometimes clog pores or irritate the scalp. Instead, apply oil one to two hours before washing. Use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo, avoid tight hairstyles, and minimize heat styling.

You can also try a biotin-based supplement or a topical Minoxidil two percent solution (if prescribed by your doctor), which helps stimulate hair regrowth. Hair recovery usually takes three to six months once the underlying cause is corrected, so patience and consistent care are key.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
