Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am planning to get married. Performed HPLC tests and my report is normal but the girl has HbE trait. Please suggest if this is harmful or the next generation has chance of being HbE carrier or there will be any medical condition to my progeny in the future. Please suggest if the marriage can be done.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have checked your attached reports (attachment removed to protect patient identity). You are not having any hemoglobinopathy. The attached report of that girl is showing HbE hemoglobinopathy and it is HbE trait. It is an autosomal recessive condition. So, if you both got married then your future child can have HbE trait disease like that of that girl. The chance of acquiring HbE is 25 % in each pregnancy.

But you need not worry even if your child is having an HbE trait. HbE trait is hemoglobinopathy in which the patient lives a normal life and will not be symptomatic at all. Sometimes mild fatigue can occur in a few patients but not troublesome. So you need not do any further investigation. You are totally free from hemoglobinopathy, so do not worry. You can marry her if you like her.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

You have mentioned that the chance of acquiring HbE is 25 % by that do you mean HbE trait or HbE major. Another doctor was consulted by my parents and he mentioned 50 % chance of the child having HbE trait. Please let me know what are the chances 25 % or 50 %.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

There is a 50 % chance of your future child acquiring HbE trait. The HbE disease cannot be possible in your future child as you are completely normal. According to my opinion, you both need not worry and you can marry and plan a child. There is no need to worry at all if your child is having HbE. The HbE trait patient lives normally and no need to worry.

I hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further. Take care.
