This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am having a severe headache and cannot keep my balance or stand for too long. What could be the reason?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I understand that these symptoms can be very uncomfortable and worrying. It is completely understandable to feel concerned when you are experiencing a severe headache along with balance problems. Let me help you understand what might be happening and what you should do next.

According to your symptoms and signs, having a severe headache with difficulty keeping your balance and being unable to stand for long over the past few days is something that should be taken seriously and properly investigated.

A headache associated with loss of balance or dizziness can have several possible causes. One common reason is inner ear problems, such as vestibular neuritis or labyrinthitis, where inflammation of the balance organs in the inner ear causes dizziness, imbalance, and headache.

Another possible cause is a severe migraine, which can sometimes cause a one-sided headache with dizziness, light sensitivity, nausea, and difficulty maintaining balance.

In addition, infections (viral or bacterial), dehydration, low blood pressure, anemia, or low blood sugar may also produce similar symptoms.

Since you mentioned that you previously took antibiotics and malaria medication, it is also important to confirm whether malaria or another infection could be contributing to your symptoms.

Because your symptoms have lasted for about three days and include imbalance, you should see a doctor in person as soon as possible. A detailed medical history, full physical and neurological examination, blood investigations, and, if needed, a CT scan may be required rather than relying only on pain relief medications.

Until you see a doctor, you should rest in a quiet environment, drink adequate fluids, avoid sudden head movements, and avoid driving or operating machinery.

You may take simple pain relief if needed, such as Acetaminophen 1 gram up to three times a day. However, do not take any other medications until you consult a doctor in person.

Kindly revert if there are any queries.

Thank you.
