Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My wife noticed that her urine appeared dark in the morning. Is it due to the blood in the urine? I have attached the images. Should I take her to the emergency room?
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
From the attached images (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity), it looks like gross hematuria, so I suggest her to go to the ER (emergency room) because she needs to undergo urine analysis and urine culture. The treatment should start with antibiotics.
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Thank you for the reply,
I did some tests today and have an appointment with a urologist. If it is an infection, do I need to give her something in the meanwhile so that it does not spread?
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I suggest her to take the tablet Ciprofloxacin 500 mg twice daily till the test results. Consult a specialist doctor, discuss with them, and take medications with their consent.
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Thank you for the reply,
She underwent an ultrasound and CT scan in the ER, and the doctor found a kidney stone of 0.433 inch. Why was a change in urine color noted? Could something else cause this besides the kidney stone?
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
Do not worry, as kidney stone is the cause of all the problems. The stone treatment will be decided after the CT (computed tomography) scan. I suggest her to continue with the table Ciprofloxacin for now.
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Thank you for the reply,
The doctor already did a CT scan, and my wife is planning to undergo shockwave therapy. I just want to know whether the blood the urine revert to normal. Is this pattern normal? I thought it would stay bloody till the issue was resolved.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
This is normal as there will be bleeding on and off. After the treatment, there may be some bleeding in the beginning.
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Thank you for the reply,
Today we got the report of the CT scan, and it is quite different from the ultrasound results. I will attach them. The ultrasound says 0.433 inch stone in the urethra, and the CT scan says 0.19 inch stone in the pelvis. Is this the same spot but with different names? How can the size be so different?
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
CT (computed tomography) scan will give the actual size and is the most accurate imaging. The pelviureteric junction is the upper ureter, so do not get confused. From the attached images (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity), treatment decisions are taken based on the CT (computed tomography) scan rather than the ultrasound. I prefer shock wave therapy for this stone as hydronephrosis is mild without perinephric stranding.
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Thank you for the reply,
We have an appointment for shockwave therapy tomorrow. The bleeding seems to have stopped since yesterday.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I hope the stone will be fragmented and the issue will resolve.
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Thank you for the reply,
My wife underwent the shockwave therapy around four hours ago. They gave her a sedative, and she was fine after the procedure for a few hours. Now she has pain and the tablet Paracetamol 1000 mg is not really helping. Is this normal, and when do I need to act quickly? It is getting a little scary for me.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
After the shockwave therapy, if there is pain and vomiting it means the stone has been removed after fragmentation. In case the fragment is big, it can cause an obstruction at the lower level and cause pain. Do not worry about kidney failure as we have two kidneys. If blockage persists for more than four weeks, the chances of kidney failure are high.
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Thank you for the reply,
Yes the CT scan showed that the stone is going down. She took fluids and stuff for vomiting and pain. The urine is now clear.
Hello,
Welcome back to ilciniq.com.
You do not have to worry at all now.
Patient's Query
Thank you doctor for the reply,
She said that she feels better now. Has she passed the stone?
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
From the attached images (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity), that is a stone.
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Thank you for the reply,
She was prescribed the tablet Tavanic, but she had diarrhea this morning. Could they be related, or could this be from the overnight hospital fluids and drips she took? They gave her painkillers and antibiotics.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
Yes, the tablet can cause diarrhea. I suggest her to take the tablet Ciprofloxacin 500 mg twice daily for five days. Consult a specialist doctor, discuss with them, and take medications with their consent.
Patient's Query
