What are the treatment options for managing hemophilia?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a friend whose son has hemophilia; he is only ten years old. My friend is always on edge, worried about every bump and scrape he might get, especially when he is out playing.

  1. We have read a bit about how he has to be extra careful, but it is tough for a child, you know?
  2. It sounds like he is often in pain, especially after any minor injury. She is also nervous about his schooling and whether he will have to miss a lot. Are there any new treatments or preventive steps that can make things a bit easier for him and allow him to live more like other children?

I just want to know what can give him the best chance at a normal, happy childhood.

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

Hemophilia can present unique challenges, especially for a young child who wants to play and explore like his peers. A few treatment options include:

  1. Factor replacement therapy is the primary treatment for hemophilia. Children with hemophilia A receive factor VIII, and those with hemophilia B receive factor IX.
  2. Newer formulations of clotting factors, known as extended half-life (EHL) products, are designed to remain in the body longer, reducing the frequency of infusions required.
  3. Gene therapy is an emerging area of treatment that provides a more permanent solution by introducing a gene that allows the body to produce its own clotting factor. This is still in the experimental stage.
  4. Prophylactic treatment involves administering clotting factor concentrates on a regular basis to prevent bleeding episodes rather than treating them after they occur. This can help protect against injuries during activities.
  5. Educating your friend and her son about hemophilia is important.
  6. Choosing low-impact activities can help minimize the risk of injury.
  7. Regular check-ups: Regular visits to a hematologist are essential.
  8. It is important to work with school staff to ensure they understand his needs and have a plan in place.
  9. For pain management after injuries, ice packs, rest, and over-the-counter pain relief medications can be helpful. Always consult the child’s doctor before giving any medication.

Consulting a pediatric hematologist is crucial for managing the condition effectively.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
