Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

What is hepatopulmonary syndrome? How long does a patient with hepatopulmonary syndrome last if not treated? Do patients with hepatopulmonary syndrome get treated easily?

Answered by Dr. Albana Greca

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Hepatopulmonary syndrome is a syndrome of shortness of breath associated with hypoxemia (low oxygen levels in the blood of arteries). This is caused by vasodilation of blood vessels in the lungs in patients with liver disease. If liver transplant takes place, the survival rate for five years is 74 %. If no liver transplant, the survival rate is very low. Liver transplant is the key treatment for these types of patients.

All the best.
