What alternate treatments are available for femoroacetabular impingement other than surgery?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 20-year-old female. My height is 173 centimeters, and I weigh 71 kilograms. I was a taekwondo player and footballer, but I stopped playing. My hip has hurt me for six years. Every year it becomes worse. So I made an MRI of the hips and pelvic bones with direct MR arthrography for the right hip last year. The MR data suggested the mild form of the right pincer type of femoroacetabular impingement for further correlations, and I do not understand any medical expression. So now it hurts me very much.

Please tell me if it needs surgery.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Femoroacetabular impingement is abnormal contact and rubbing between the anterior femoral head and its socket that cause inflammation and pain over there. Most pain is in the groin area. This condition also increases the risk of osteoarthritis of the hip.

Mostly due to athletic activities, the treatment is surgical. Kindly contact your orthopedic surgeon. About 75 % of patients get better after surgery, and 25 % will have mild or no relief of symptoms. In the meantime, use the tablet Naproxen 509 milligrams twice daily with a meal for one week. It will help with inflammation and pain. Also, avoid jogging, jumping, or even running. After surgery, if symptoms improve, you can exercise, but even then, avoid jogging.

Thank you.
