Can ankylosing spondylitis be treated with medication?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 35-year-old female. Over the past few months, I have been having severe back and hip pain, sometimes the pain shoots up and becomes unbearable. I used to feel tired and weak and the pain also showed in my shoulders, and knees too. I visited the doctor, and after several investigations, it was found to be ankylosing spondylitis. I was devasted to hear this, will this reduce my lifespan? Should I bear this pain for my life? Can that be treated with any medications? I am worried about the disease and its complications.

Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Ankylosing spondylitis is an inflammatory arthritis that affects the spine and other joints, but it can be managed with long-term treatment and physical activity. Medications such as NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), DMARDs (disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs), and biologics are used depending on the disease stage. Physical therapy is crucial to maintaining joint function. A detailed evaluation is necessary to identify any coexisting inflammation and customize treatment accordingly. Please share your blood reports and scans for a better understanding.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
