What is the treatment of HIV encephalopathy in children?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My friend’s child is seven years old. He has HIV encephalopathy. Can you please explain what causes this and tell us if it is curable? His family is very upset and does not know what to do. Are there any long-term solutions or therapies that can help improve the child’s quality of life?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) encephalopathy is a neurological complication caused by the virus directly infecting the brain, leading to inflammation and damage. It can result in developmental delays, difficulty in movement, memory, or behaviour changes. It is not fully curable. But with early antiretroviral therapy (ART) the virus can be suppressed, progression reduced, and sometimes improve symptoms. Long-term management includes regular neurological evaluations, physical and occupational therapy, and special education programs to address developmental challenges. Supportive care, involving taking a healthy diet, stress management, and maintaining adherence to ART, can significantly improve the child’s quality of life. Emotional support for the family is crucial.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.

Regards.
