Does diabetes affect the accuracy of HIV test results?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 42-year-old man, and I am anxious after having unprotected sex six weeks ago with someone whose human immunodeficiency virus status I did not know. I have been feeling tired, having night sweats, and my throat is sore with swollen glands. I had a 4th-generation HIV test at four weeks, which was negative, but I am worried it was too early. I also have type 2 diabetes and take Metformin, and I am wondering if this affects the test or my immune response. Should I retest, and when is the best time? Should I take any extra precautions due to my diabetes?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

The 4th-generation HIV test, which detects both HIV antibodies and p24 antigen, is reliable. For confirmation, it is recommended to retest at six weeks to three months, as some cases take longer to show detectable levels. Symptoms like fatigue and sore throat are not definitive for HIV, especially with a negative result at four weeks. Anxiety from waiting for results may also contribute to these symptoms.

Your type 2 diabetes and Metformin (Glucophage) use do not affect the accuracy of the HIV test. However, uncontrolled diabetes can weaken your immune system, making you more susceptible to infections. It is important to practice safe sex, manage your diabetes, exercise regularly, and follow your medication regimen to support overall health. A physical exam by a doctor is also essential for a full evaluation.

I hope that you got an answer.

Please let me know if you need any further help.

Thank you.
