Patient's Query
Hi, Doctor,
I have been stressing about HIV for the last 12 months. My last exposure was 12 months ago, and I have done plenty of tests since then. I did three antibody self-tests 5 months after exposure. I was not sure how to interpret them, as they only showed one visible line, which essentially means they are negative.
However, I was obsessing over the results and thought I might have seen a shade of a second line. So, I went to a clinic for a fourth-generation blood test, and it came back negative. The clinic also did a self-test on me, which was negative.
I then took two other fourth-generation tests at 9 months and 11 months after exposure, and they both turned out negative. Now, I am stressed that I might be actually positive, but the tests did not pick up the antibodies. I read that there are cases when the only way to detect HIV is by RNA or DNA testing. Should I go for a DNA test, or are the negative tests I had conclusive?
Kindly help.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have reviewed your medical history and understand your concerns.
If the HIV antibodies test, conducted in a reliable laboratory after 90 days of exposure, is negative, then it is conclusive, provided there is no further risk exposure. Repeatedly negative tests after 90 days of exposure are also conclusive. There is no need for further HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) tests. Home-based tests can yield false results if not interpreted properly or interpreted late.
Therefore, there is no need for additional HIV tests or DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) tests. Please try to forget about the episode and concerns regarding HIV. Lead a normal life free of worries about HIV. Get involved in activities that interest you.
I hope this has helped you.
Please feel free to reach me again in case of further queries.
Thank you.
