Does Lamivudine and Zidovudine protect against HIV?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I think that I have been exposed to HIV, but I have not been tested and am afraid of having it; however, I have been taking Pep pills, but I am unsure about it.

  1. What happens if you take Lamivudine with Zidovudine for PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis)?
  2. Does the tablet work, and what is it intended for?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Tablet Lamivudine (Epivir) and Zidovudine are anti-HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) medications that are used to suppress HIV but do not kill it. HIV does not have any treatment yet. So, you are taking them for HIV exposure. I may presume their efficacy will depend on your immunity and blood level; they can reduce the normal blood level and cause a severe immune reaction. So, I suggest you take them for at least one week and check your HIV status after one month.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
