Do HIV rapid tests work similar to laboratory tests?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Can you tell me how reliable rapid HIV tests are? My co-worker got tested at a free clinic, and the results came back fast, but he is not sure if he can trust them. Do these rapid tests work as well as laboratory ones, or should he go for another test just to make sure?

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Rapid HIV tests are generally reliable, but their accuracy depends on several factors, including the type of test used and the timing of the test.

Most rapid tests have high sensitivity (99 %) and specificity (98 %). There is a term called window period. It means a specific period of time taken by a microorganism to multiply and during this time the patient will show negative even if he has contracted the disease.

If your co-worker has done the test too soon after exposure, the test will come back negative. Usually, a person should wait four to twelve weeks after exposure to confirm. If your co-worker has doubts, he can confirm with a laboratory-based test, especially if he had a recent risk or the clinic did not specify the test type.

I hope this helps.

Take care.
