Does HIV survive in air on used toilet paper?

Hello doctor,

I was in a public restroom, and one of the toilet cabin doors was open next to the sink. After washing my hands, I used the automatic air dryer. Suddenly, the air pressure from the dryer was so strong that it pulled and shredded the toilet paper that was on the floor, causing it to fly into the air. Some tiny bits of toilet paper even landed in my hair, though not many.

I started to wonder if I might have breathed in some of the shredded toilet paper or if tiny bits could have entered my nose without me noticing due to their size. If the toilet paper had urine, feces, or blood on it, could there be a risk of HIV or hepatitis B and C transmission through inhalation, or if the shredded paper entered the nose? Also, how long is HIV infectious when exposed to air? Kindly help.

These viruses do not survive long outside the human body, and even if they are present on surfaces, they are not capable of causing infection through casual contact.

To be specific, HIV cannot be transmitted through skin contact, kissing, sharing utensils, or handling tissues or surfaces, even if they seem unclean. The virus quickly loses its ability to infect once outside the body. Even if the tissue or object in question had visible contamination like urine or feces, the risk of transmission from casual handling is extremely low, especially if you have no open cuts or wounds on your hands. It is similar to how we often come into contact with dirt or soil, which contains many microbes, yet we rarely get sick unless there is direct bloodstream exposure. So please do not worry. Is it anatomically possible for a shredded piece of toilet paper (approximately 0.1-0.5 cm) to fly into my nose and enter my body?

Do not worry, HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C do not spread through fomites, or in this case, through shredded paper. The survival time of these viruses is 6 to 24 hours, but even if they are alive, they cannot spread disease.

Shredded pieces of paper cannot enter your body through the nose. They are blocked by the nose and upper respiratory tract and are removed. Please do not worry. I understand you had a horrible experience, but no long-term harm has been done.

If our body's defences are non-functional even for one hour, we would be immediately invaded by pathogens, and we would fall sick. So, even if a few bacteria entered your body, they would be killed by the body's defences. So, you are safe.
