Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 20-year-old guy, and I have been hearing different things about how HIV is spread.
Can you explain the main ways someone can contract HIV, and what activities do not pose a risk?
I want to understand what precautions I should take to stay safe and avoid any misconceptions about transmission.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) can only be transmitted through unprotected sexual contact, contaminated blood transfusion, or direct exchange of needles and syringes or a pregnant HIV mother can transmit HIV to a newborn if not on therapy.
This virus can not be transmitted through casual contact, hugging, kissing, staying together, sharing food or utensils, or through flies or mosquito bites.
Precautions to be taken include consistent and correct use of condoms and avoiding unprotected sexual contact with multiple partners or with partners of unknown status.
These days, pre-exposure prophylaxis is available for people who perceive themselves to be at substantial risk of acquiring HIV.
I hope this information helps you.
Revert in case of queries.
Regards.
