How is HIV diagnosed and treated?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 38-year-old male. I had sex with a sex worker two weeks ago. I started having fever, nausea, vomiting, headache, and sometimes blood in my urine recently. Can this be something like a bacterial infection? Does it seem to be the initial symptoms of HIV? Can this HIV spread to other family members easily? If so, how does it spread? How to prevent other family members from developing this infection? Can taking HIV medications help me treat this infection? How to get diagnosed and treat this HIV?

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

These symptoms could be due to various reasons. Please get tested for the following infections at the earliest, and if the results are negative, get a repeat test at six weeks and then at three months. Do HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) rapid test, HBsAg (hepatitis B surface antigen), Anti-HCV (hepatitis C antibody), VDRL (venereal disease research laboratory), urine routine, and culture sensitivity. There are no specific symptoms or signs that can diagnose HIV. It can only be diagnosed through tests. Also, there is an effective medication for people who are diagnosed with HIV. If you are not sure whether you have an HIV infection or not, avoid unprotected sexual contact with your partner to prevent transmission.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
