Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 32-year-old man who has been experiencing extreme fatigue for the past several months, along with frequent fevers and night sweats that leave my sheets completely soaked. I have unintentionally lost about 20 pounds, and the lymph nodes in my neck, armpits, and groin are swollen and tender. I continue to get infections that take a very long time to heal, including oral thrush and recurring skin rashes.
Around six months ago, I had unprotected sexual encounters, and since then, I have been experiencing persistent diarrhea and a dry cough that does not go away. I am terrified that these symptoms might be related to a serious infection that is affecting my immune system.
Please tell me,
Could this combination of weight loss, recurring infections, and swollen lymph nodes be signs of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)?
What can be the another condition that compromises the immune system?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query and can understand your concern.
Thank you for sharing your problem. The combination of unexplained weight loss, persistent fevers, night sweats, swollen lymph nodes, recurrent infections, oral thrush, diarrhea, and cough is very significant and must not be ignored.
These symptoms suggest a serious underlying condition that requires prompt medical evaluation. Please do not delay in seeking in-person care.
You are taking the right step by reaching out early, and with timely testing and treatment, many of these conditions can be managed effectively.
I recommend the following investigations:
Please get an HIV test (fourth-generation ELISA(enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay)/antigen-antibody test) as soon as possible. This will give a reliable result since more than six months have passed since exposure.
Additional tests, such as a complete blood count (CBC), chest X-Ray or CT(computed tomography) scan, tuberculosis screening, and possibly a lymph node biopsy, may also be required depending on the clinical findings.
Avoid any delay; please consult an infectious disease specialist or physician urgently for a thorough examination and investigations.
In the meantime, maintain good nutrition and hydration, and avoid further unprotected sexual contact until your health status is clarified.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
