Is there a risk of HIV by just fingering the vagina?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

This is related to HIV. One month back, I went to have sex with a woman, but I did not do any sexual practice with her but I kept my finger into her vagina for one second.

Is there any chance of getting HIV through fingering?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

You can get an infection if you have any cut injury on your finger or if you keep your finger in your mouth or eyes. Otherwise, there is no problem with HIV.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I did not have any cuts on my hands, and I did not get in touch with vaginal fluid. Is there a chance to contract even though I washed my hands after ten minutes?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

If there were no cuts on the hand and you washed your hands, then no need to worry. There is no chance of HIV.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Is there any chance of getting a fever after two days of exposure? I got a nose blockade and a fever, which resolved in one day.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

If it is HIV, it will take one to three months to get the symptoms.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I have tested negative for HIV after 43 days. Is it conclusive?

The test used is a step card method.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The card test is not reliable. You need to do an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test for confirmation, or you need to do an HIV antigen-antibody test to be 100 % sure.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

It is HIV TRI DOT. I have been to a laboratory. My doubt is how many days antibodies take to develop. I have attached my blood report. Please examine it.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I checked the reports (attachments removed for patient's identity protection).

Antibodies will develop after a month and reach good levels after three months. That is why we check antibodies and antigens together in the fourth-generation test.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

This is after 46 days of exposure.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I checked the reports and it is negative. No need to repeat the test from now on.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

After 45 days and 10 hours, I gave blood at the laboratory. Can the test be reliable?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Yes, after 45 days the test is reliable. No need to worry.

Thank you.
