What strategies has USAID used to prevent HIV spread?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

As a 30-year-old science student interested in global health initiatives, I would like to learn more about the strategies and programs implemented by USAID to prevent the spread of HIV and mitigate the impact of AIDS, particularly in developing countries. What are some of the key prevention approaches USAID has employed, and how effective have they been in reducing new HIV infections and supporting those living with HIV/AIDS?

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

A simplified and comprehensive response:

USAID (United States Agency for International Development) will draw on its extensive experience in successfully integrating family planning and reproductive health, malaria, maternal and child health and nutrition, and tuberculosis into primary health to integrate HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) as well, and will focus on providing person-centered service delivery.

A response that empowers adolescents and youth:

USAID will increase options for and expand access to health and HIV prevention and treatment for young people and link them to jobs and education opportunities. It is a component of DREAMS (determined, resilient, empowered, AIDS-free, mentored and safe) initiative empowers vulnerable adolescent girls and young women aged 10 to 24 years with the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy choices and remain HIV-free.

Preexposure prophylaxis and gender-based violence prevention and response programs are an integral part of the existing prevention package. Voluntary medical male circumcision is provided to males aged 15 years and above based on evidence that conventional surgical circumcision among younger boys is associated with a higher risk of HIV Infection.

I hope this helps you.

Revert in case of queries.

Regards.
