Will I ever find love living with HIV in my mid-20s as a virgin?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 25-year-old man, and I was recently told that I am HIV-positive. Although physically I am doing just fine, with my viral load decreasing due to the use of anti-retroviral therapy (ART), and my infectious disease specialist has been very optimistic regarding changes in the perception of living with HIV since there is an effective treatment, I find it really hard to deal with the emotional impact of the diagnosis.

I have never had any serious relationships before, and I am a virgin. This somehow increases the pressure I face, because I have no idea how and when I would be able to disclose my status to someone in the future, and whether anyone would accept me and my diagnosis or not despite all the medical reassurance I receive from specialists.

  • If you were diagnosed with HIV in your twenties, did you get used to dating and intimacy with time?

  • Is it reasonable to think that I will be able to have a romantic life?

Thank you for your help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your willingness to share your feelings.

Being diagnosed with HIV can be an overwhelming experience, and I am sure that you are going through all kinds of emotions while coping with such a major change.

I am glad to know that your viral load is reacting well to antiretroviral therapy (ART) and that your infectious disease specialist feels positive about your future health prognosis. Although treatment has greatly increased the health outcomes and quality of life for HIV patients, sometimes it takes a much longer time to cope emotionally than physically.

Meeting other people who have been diagnosed with HIV, either locally or through an online forum, can be a big help. Talking to people who have gone through similar situations will give you assurance, advice, and support. Sharing your HIV status with other people should be done only when you feel ready.

Keeping up good habits like working out, getting enough sleep, not smoking, and staying away from drugs can be good for your mental health. It might also be helpful to write down your mood, your sleep patterns, and other symptoms.

From the information you provided, it is possible that your condition can be regarded as a normal adaptation to a significant event in your life. Still, you need to consult with a mental health professional. Consulting with a psychologist or a counselor can be quite helpful for coping during this period. Moreover, if you have detected changes in your mood after starting ART treatment, you need to speak with an HIV specialist because sometimes these medicines can cause mood changes.

If you feel hopeless and even think about hurting yourself, you should immediately ask for help from a mental health professional or a member of your medical team.

The following are some of the issues that could be considered at this point:

  • Normal adaptation to an emotional experience after a life-changing diagnosis.

  • Adjustment disorder, if you fit the clinical definition of such a problem.

  • In very rare cases, changes in your mood caused by drugs may be due to your specific ART regimen.

  • The things that are affecting your mood can be found with the help of a thorough psychological evaluation.

I hope that this helps.

Thank you.
