Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My elderly mother is 78 years old. She has been sick for a week and is getting worse. It started as a cold, but now she is barely eating, and her breathing is so labored. The nursing home sent her to the hospital yesterday, and they found something called HMPV. Her oxygen levels keep dropping, and they may put her on a ventilator. She already has COPD, and I am terrified. The doctors are talking about moving her to the ICU. What should we expect? Is this serious for her age?
Kindly suggest.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concern.
Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) can be serious, especially for elderly people with underlying lung conditions like COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). It often starts like a cold but can turn into severe pneumonia or respiratory failure, which sounds like what is happening with her.
Because her oxygen levels are dropping and she is having labored breathing, the ICU (intensive care unit) is the best place for her. They can monitor her closely, provide high-level respiratory support, and, if necessary, put her on a ventilator to help her breathe.
At her age, with COPD, HMPV can be very dangerous, similar to RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) or severe flu. The risks include:
Respiratory failure (needing a ventilator).
Secondary bacterial infections (like pneumonia).
Longer recovery time (even if she improves).
If she goes on a ventilator, the doctors will likely try to keep it temporary, but the process can be tough on someone of her age. Right now, the main concerns are getting her oxygen stabilized and preventing complications.
I hope this helps.
Take care.
