How to manage HMPV in kids and patients with heart problems?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Our entire household (me 45, husband 47, kids eight and ten) got HMPV, starting with our youngest last week. My husband has heart problems, and his breathing is worsening. His lips look bluish.

  1. What heart attack symptoms should we watch for?

  2. Should he adjust his heart medications?

  3. How can we prevent cross-infection at home?

  4. What symptoms in the kids would require ER care?

  5. The kids are improving, but my husband ca not walk to the bathroom without getting out of breath. Should we be concerned?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

HMPV can cause respiratory infections, which, when combined with heart problems, can be serious. Let us address your questions:

Heart attack symptoms to watch for: Given your husband’s heart history and worsening breathing, be aware of the following symptoms-

  1. Chest pain or discomfort: Tightness, pressure, or fullness in the chest, especially if lasting more than a few minutes or recurring.

  2. Shortness of breath: Difficulty breathing at rest or during normal activities, especially when combined with chest pain.

  3. Pain radiating to other areas: Pain in the arms (usually left side), neck, jaw, back, or stomach.

  4. Bluish lips or skin: A sign of low oxygen, which requires immediate medical attention.

  5. Lightheadedness or dizziness: Can indicate a heart issue, particularly with shortness of breath or chest discomfort.

  6. Sweating: Cold sweats without exertion or fever.

  7. Fatigue: Unexplained or sudden extreme tiredness.

Since your husband’s lips are bluish and he was struggling to breathe, seek immediate medical attention to assess his oxygen levels and heart function.

Should He Adjust His Heart Medications?

Do not adjust his medications without consulting his cardiologist. HMPV can affect how his body responds to heart medications. His doctor may adjust medications based on his current condition, but only under medical supervision. Contact his cardiologist for guidance.

Preventing cross-infection at home: To minimize cross-infection-

  1. Isolation: Have your husband isolate in a separate room, and limit contact with others, especially the kids.

  2. Masks: Everyone should wear masks when near each other.

  3. Hand hygiene: Wash hands frequently for at least 20 seconds, especially after touching surfaces or coughing.

  4. Disinfection: Clean high-touch surfaces regularly with disinfectant.

  5. Ventilation: Open windows to improve airflow.

  6. Laundry: Wash bedding, towels, and clothes in hot water.

Consider using air purifiers in high-traffic areas to reduce airborne viral particles.

Symptoms to watch for in the kids: Even if your kids are improving, monitor for these signs-

  1. Trouble breathing: Difficulty breathing or shallow breaths.

  2. Severe coughing or wheezing: Persistent or worsening coughing or wheezing.

  3. Bluish tint: Lips or face turning bluish indicates low oxygen levels and needs immediate attention.

  4. Persistent fever: High fever not responding to medication.

  5. Extreme fatigue: Excessive tiredness or lethargy, signaling possible worsening.

Immediate action for your husband: Your husband’s difficulty walking to the bathroom and bluish lips suggest severe respiratory distress. Seek emergency care immediately. This could indicate complications like heart failure or pulmonary embolism. If his oxygen saturation drops below 92 percent, supplemental oxygen may be needed.

In summary:

Watch for signs of a heart attack: chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, and bluish lips. Consult a cardiologist before adjusting medications. To prevent cross-infection, isolate as much as possible and practice good hygiene. Monitor kids for worsening symptoms, especially difficulty breathing or a high fever. Seek immediate medical attention for your husband given the worsening breathing difficulties and bluish lips. It is important to act quickly, especially with your husband's symptoms, and make sure he is evaluated by medical professionals as soon as possible. Please do not hesitate to get him checked out right away.

I hope this helps answer your query.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
