Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
My voice has changed. I speak a little through my mouth, and the voice stops.
There is no pain in my throat. The hoarseness that was there is also gone. I am taking medicine, etc., but my voice has changed completely.
When my throat gets bad, my voice becomes hoarse. I do not understand why. I have tried a lot of medicine and have also shown it to doctors, but no solution.
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query and understand your concerns.
Based on your description, the most likely diagnosis is muscle tension dysphonia (MTD).
The key reasons for your primary symptom are voice change or stopping with no pain. The common trigger often follows an initial throat problem (like your hoarseness), but continues due to altered voice use patterns.
The key finding you mentioned, like "I speak a little, and the voice stops" - this is highly suggestive of improper vocal cord coordination, not an infection. Treatment mismatch, like antibiotics (like Augmentin) and cough syrup, does not treat this muscular or behavioral issue, which can also contribute to this.
So my suggestions are:
Stopping unnecessary medications like Augmentin (an antibiotic) is not indicated for this and should not be taken without a confirmed bacterial infection.
Consult an ENT Specialist, as this is essential. They need to visualize your vocal cords with a laryngoscope to rule out other causes (like nodules, polyps, or paralysis) and confirm MTD.
See a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP). If MTD is confirmed, voice therapy with an SLP is the primary and most effective treatment. They will teach you proper vocal technique and relaxation.
So, schedule an appointment with an ENT doctor for a proper examination. Do not take antibiotics without a prescription for a diagnosed infection.
I hope my answer is clear to you, and please do not hesitate to ask any questions at any time.
Thank you.
