Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma last week, and I am only 26. I have not fully processed it yet. The thing that has been weighing on me more than anything is whether I can still have children someday.
Does a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma at 26 mean I will not be able to have children later, or is this something the treatment team can help protect before chemotherapy starts?
Please advise.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
I am really sorry you have to deal with this so early in life. It makes sense that your mind is already jumping to the future, like thinking about having kids one day.
Hodgkin lymphoma by itself usually does not make someone infertile. The bigger concern is not the illness, but the treatment used to fight it. Treatments like chemotherapy and sometimes radiation therapy can affect the body’s reproductive organs (like ovaries or testes). How much it affects fertility depends on the type of drugs, the dose, and where radiation is given.
So the key idea is that it is not the cancer itself; it is the treatment that may sometimes affect fertility.
That is why doctors pay a lot of attention to fertility preservation before treatment starts. There is often a small but important time window to plan ahead. Depending on your situation, options might include the following:
Sometimes, doctors also refer patients to a fertility specialist (reproductive endocrinologist) to plan the safest option based on the treatment plan.
The good news is that many people who are treated for Hodgkin lymphoma later go on to have children naturally or with medical help. Risks are not the same for everyone, but there is definitely real hope, and your medical team can help protect your future plans as much as possible while treating the cancer effectively.
I hope this helps you.
Thank you.
