Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I have HPV type 6 or 11, and I kissed my niece, who is 5 months old, more than 50 times. They were mostly peck kisses, but her tongue sometimes touched my lips. Can she also have HPV?
Please help.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Thank you for your query, and I can understand your concern.
This is a very common concern, and I want to reassure you clearly. HPV (human papilloma virus) types 6 and 11 are low-risk genital HPV types and are transmitted almost exclusively through direct genital or mucosal sexual contact, not through casual contact such as kissing.
HPV is not spread by peck kissing, saliva, or brief mouth contact, even if a baby’s tongue briefly touches the lips. There is no evidence that kissing an infant can transmit HPV types 6 or 11.
Transmission to infants is rare and, when it occurs, is usually related to exposure during childbirth, not postnatal contact. Based on what you have described, your niece is not at risk, and no testing, treatment, or monitoring is needed.
You do not need to avoid normal, affectionate contact, such as holding or kissing on the cheek. If you ever have active oral warts (which are uncommon with HPV 6/11), avoiding mouth-to-mouth contact until they resolve would be reasonable, but in the absence of visible lesions, there is no concern.
Please try not to worry; you have not harmed your niece.
Hope I have addressed all of your queries and concerns. Do follow up whenever needed.
Thank you.
