How to manage persistent lip dryness and hyperpigmentation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been experiencing persistent dryness on my lips, which has led me to apply a generous amount of Vaseline daily to keep them moisturized. Despite this, I have also noticed that my lips have become increasingly hyperpigmented over time, with the pigmentation becoming more noticeable.

In the past, I have tried using a few different SPF lip balms, hoping they would help, but unfortunately, they did not seem to make much of a difference. I am concerned about both the dryness and the hyperpigmentation, and would appreciate your guidance.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

Your symptoms indicate chronic lip dryness and mild pigmentation, which can often result from over-drying, sun exposure, or irritation from various products.

Based on your symptoms, the possible causes for your condition can be as follows:

  1. Chronic lip licking or friction causes constant cycles of moisture loss, which can exacerbate dryness and darkening of the lips.

  2. Overuse of petrolatum Jelly provides protection, but exclusive long-term use without gentle exfoliation or hydration underneath can lead to dullness or trap dead skin cells.

  3. Allergic or irritant contact cheilitis may be triggered by certain toothpaste ingredients, lip balms, or flavoring agents.

  4. Sun exposure can contribute to pigmentation, even with SPF (sun protection factor), if reapplication is insufficient.

  5. Nutritional or hormonal factors, such as low vitamin B12, iron deficiency, or thyroid dysfunction, can worsen dryness and pigmentary changes.

For treatment, I suggest you consider using a depigmenting lip serum or cream at night that contains ingredients such as Kojic Acid, vitamin C, and Licorice. I suggest you apply it only once daily at night for six to eight weeks. Also, in the morning, always follow up with a hydrating lip balm.

I hope that this answers your query.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
