Can high blood pressure cause body pain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 55-year-old male experiencing body pain and wondering if it could be related to my blood pressure. I have heard a lot about hypertension and am concerned it might be affecting me. I am unsure if my diet is causing any issues or if it needs to be changed. Could my diet be worsening my hypertension? Should I see a doctor to check my blood pressure, or are there specific dietary changes I should consider? What kind of tests or treatments might be necessary?

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

At 55, it is important to consider that persistent or worsening pain could indeed be related to hypertension, as high blood pressure can contribute to various types of pain and health issues. Diet plays a significant role in managing blood pressure; consuming too much sodium, unhealthy fats, and processed foods can exacerbate hypertension. Adopting a diet low in salt and rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins is beneficial. Reducing alcohol intake and avoiding excessive caffeine can also help.

Seeing a doctor is crucial for accurately assessing your blood pressure and determining if it is contributing to your pain. Your doctor may recommend monitoring your blood pressure regularly and possibly conducting tests such as blood work or imaging studies to understand the underlying cause of your symptoms.

Treatments for hypertension might include lifestyle changes such as dietary adjustments, increased physical activity, and possibly medication if necessary. Addressing these factors can help manage your blood pressure and potentially alleviate the pain you are experiencing. Share your blood pressure levels with your doctor and use painkillers if needed. If the issue persists, plan for tests such as RA (rheumatoid arthritis) factor, ASO (anti-streptolysin O), and CRP (C-reactive protein).

Thanks for using icliniq, and have a nice day.
