Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My 28-year-old boyfriend visited a doctor, who informed him that he had high blood pressure. His blood pressure reading was 160/90 mmHg. He had never had high blood pressure before this, but he has been experiencing general anxiety daily for a long time. He was hesitant to take blood pressure medication due to his fear of it, so the doctor prescribed Sertraline instead. I have heard a lot of concerning things about antidepressants, and I feel he should have opted for the blood pressure medication; I do not believe that Sertraline was the best choice. He also suffers from sleep apnea. Can you provide any advice on Sertraline versus blood pressure medication?
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern for your boyfriend.
He is experiencing issues with high blood pressure, likely due to his sleep apnea. His BMI (body mass index) is 33, which classifies him as obese. Obesity can contribute to sleep apnea, and in turn, sleep apnea can lead to high blood pressure. The Sertraline prescribed by his doctor is intended to help manage his anxiety and improve his sleep. In my clinic, I advise patients in similar situations to start by losing weight, as this can help reduce blood pressure and alleviate sleep apnea. I also suggest considering antihypertensive medications, such as beta-blockers (like Bisoprolol), until they reach a healthier weight. Additionally, he should avoid smoking and alcohol and sleep on his side rather than on his back. Please consult his specialist doctor to discuss these options and obtain their consent before starting any medication.
Best regards.
