Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have hyperthyroidism and take the tablet Neo-Mercazole 5 mg once daily with the tablet Inderal 10 mg twice daily. My latest TFT test is normal however I have to continue medication. Can I undergo laparoscopic cholecystectomy safely? Do I need to stop the medication?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Regarding your query, your thyroid status is normal with current medication and as I can understand, you have no symptoms of hyperthyroidism. Uncontrolled hyperthyroidism is associated with adverse perioperative outcomes and intra and postoperative complications which is unlikely in your case as your thyroid status is normal. No need to stop any medication. Continue taking all current medications until you are asked to do so. You will be assessed by the anesthesiologist and maybe a physician or endocrinologist also before your scheduled surgery and you will be managed preoperatively. So, in my opinion, continue all current medication. You can safely undergo the scheduled procedure under an anesthesiologist's care.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
