Can hypothyroid medications cause weakness and constipation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

We have taken consultation regarding hypothyroid. You have suggested a tablet of thyroxine 75 mcg, a tablet of calcimax forte, a capsule of Matilda forte, and a capsule of vitanova. However, my mother feels very weak after taking these medicines and has constipation problems after taking the tablet Matilda forte. But I am very surprised that if she takes multivitamins and calcium with thyroxine, why does she feel so weak?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

This never happens. How long has she been on the medications? What is her current thyroid status while taking tablet Synthroid 75 mcg? You can give her some symptomatic laxatives and include a fiber-rich diet.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

I had my mother tested for thyroid function, and the results were normal. And I have attached the results. We had a phone consultation with you about two months ago, and you recommended tablet calcimax forte, capsule matilda forte, capsule vitanova, and tablet thyroxine 75 mcg. She has pain in her ankle, and her hemoglobin is lower than normal. Could you please recommend additional medications and tell me if she should continue taking the thyroid medication?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I have reviewed the reports (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). She is doing good. Is she still taking all of her medications? If so, that is great. She must continue to take all of these medications as usual. For her low hemoglobin count, she can start taking iron tablets, perhaps capsule ferrous fumarate and folic acid, once a day in the afternoon, after lunch. Iron and calcium should not be combined. Please be cautious. After three months, a thyroid profile and hemoglobin test must be repeated. She may be considered for further treatment if her hemoglobin count is normal, she is taking vitamin B12, vitamin D, and calcium, her thyroid is normal, and her heel pain persists.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

I want to ask two things. Firstly, can she take capsule Livogen Z and capsule Matilda forte together or not? Secondly, her memory is weak. Please prescribe medications for this as she forgets even where she has kept things.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

She can combine capsule Matilda forte (mecobalamin, alpha lipoic acid, biotin, pyridoxine, and folic acid) and capsule Livogen Z (ferrous fumarate and folic acid). Iron and calcium should not be combined. Second, let us wait for the remaining medication to work before beginning memory-improving medications. There is no 100 % effective memory-enhancing drug. However, her memory will improve if you train her brain to work harder.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
