Can I recover at home with a high fever due to the flu?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 46 years old and recently tested positive for flu A, and for the past two days, I have had a very high fever along with chills, body aches, and extreme fatigue.

I have been trying to manage it at home with fluids and fever medication, but I am unsure if I am doing enough. My concerns are -

  1. Should a 46-year-old recover at home or go to the ER if the flu causes a high fever?

  2. Are there specific warning signs that suggest the infection is becoming dangerous?

  3. Also, how long should a high fever last before seeking urgent medical attention?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

I am sorry you are feeling so unwell. Influenza A can cause high fever, chills, severe body aches, headache, and profound fatigue, and many otherwise healthy adults recover at home with rest, good fluid intake, and fever-reducing medications.

However, you should seek urgent medical attention or go to the emergency department if you develop difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, chest pain, confusion, severe dizziness, inability to keep fluids down, signs of dehydration such as very little urine or extreme weakness, bluish lips, or if your symptoms suddenly worsen after initially improving.

A high fever is common during the first few days of influenza and often begins to improve within about three to five days, although some people may have a fever for a little longer. If the fever remains very high, persists beyond several days without improvement, returns after going away, or is accompanied by any concerning symptoms, you should contact a healthcare professional promptly.

Since you are 46, recovery at home is often appropriate if you are otherwise healthy and able to stay hydrated, but close monitoring is important, and antiviral treatment may be beneficial in some situations if started early.

I hope you feel better soon and make a smooth recovery.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
