Why does flu A feel so severe in young adults?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 22 years old and was recently diagnosed with influenza A. The symptoms felt much worse than I expected for my age, including high fever, body aches, and extreme fatigue that lasted longer than I thought.

This made me wonder why influenza A at 22 can feel so severe in young adults this season, as I usually assumed younger people recover quickly. Could it be due to new strains or lower immunity?

I am still feeling weak after a few days, so I want to understand if this is normal or something unusual.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I have read your query and understand your concern.

Influenza A (an acute respiratory viral infection) can sometimes cause significant symptoms even in young adults. The severity depends on several factors, including the specific viral strain circulating, your immune system’s response, and prior exposure to similar viruses.

In some seasons, certain strains can produce stronger systemic symptoms such as high fever, body aches, and fatigue, even in otherwise healthy individuals. After periods of reduced exposure to common respiratory viruses, general immunity in the population may also be lower, which can make infections feel more intense.

It is also normal for fatigue and weakness to persist for several days after the fever resolves, as the body continues to recover from the infection.

As long as symptoms are gradually improving and there are no warning signs such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, persistent high fever, or worsening weakness, this course is usually within the expected recovery pattern.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer.

Thank you.
