Are traction and IFT best for treating bulged discs in the spine?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My mother has been suffering from a l4/5 bulge disc problem. Are traction and IFT treatment good? Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Traction nowadays is not the treatment modality that is mostly considered. You need appropriate medicines, and once the pain reduces, physiotherapy is done. IFT (Interferential therapy) is also limited as it just helps to relax muscle spasms.

  1. Proper treatment is given through medications and once the pain reduces, exercises should be done regularly.
  2. Avoid lifting heavy weights.
  3. Avoid arching your back; instead, bend your knees to pick up something from the floor.
  4. Avoid sitting for longer hours.
  5. Avoid two-wheeler rides.
  6. Improve your posture while sitting.
  7. Try to get up from your chair every 20 minutes, take a walk around, and then continue working.
  8. Always sit on a chair with support to your back.
  9. Do not get up suddenly from a sleeping position. Rather, turn to the side and get up.
  10. Take bed rest if there is severe pain.
  11. Use hot packs over the affected area at least twice daily.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
