What causes lymphocyte levels to increase steadily in an individual with iron-deficiency anemia?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had my blood tests done two weeks ago to see how things are progressing. I feel fine, but since I was anemic and lacked iron, I had to do that routine after finishing the medication. I have no other physical symptoms at the moment. The only thing I knew, I used medicines messily and missed their times, dosages, etc. Also note this, I had a heavy cold, and it was gone for good five days before I made this blood test. Then I noticed that my main lymphocyte count was slowly increasing to 43.4 % six months ago and 52.8 % two months ago. However, this is also the first time my white cell count has also taken a jump. WBC also increased suddenly though, in the last two tests, it was always 5.18 %. What does this mean? I have been focussing solely on my lymphocyte count to date, so it would be great if someone could remind me what the significance of the white cell count might be. I have attached my test results for you to check. I know it is important to remember that I feel fine regardless of the numbers, but it is sometimes hard not to wonder what it means when the numbers keep going up, and I cannot help but worry about it. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have reviewed your query, and here is my suggestion.

In your attached reports (attachments are hidden to protect the patient's identity) ferritin level is low, and TIBC (total-iron binding capacity) increased, which is suggestive of mild iron deficiency anemia. With iron medication, these counts will improve. You have had a history of viral flu. In that condition, lymphocytes can be elevated. I suggest you repeat your CBC (complete blood count) after ten days. No need to worry. If in the repeat CBC, lymphocytes are high, then I will guide you further.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Best regards.
