Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

On the third day and seventh days of my period, I had unprotected sex with my husband. Since yesterday, the tenth day of my period, I have been bleeding like my period. I am feeling weak and lazy, and my stomach is not normal.

Please advise what is happening.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Usually, for a young lady of your age, ovulation occurs around the 12 to 14th day of the period. The life of an egg is 24 hours, and that of the sperm is 72 hours. So there is no chance of an egg being available on Day 3 or 7, so if you are sure about the period's date, pregnancy is ruled out. If you are unsure of the period's date, you will have to do a home urine pregnancy test. When I say not sure, the bleeding may have been lesser or lighter or different from usual periods.

The other possibilities could be

1. Any cervical erosions or raw areas on the surface of the cervix. This can give way when you have sex & can bleed bright blood. This will get resolved on its own.

2. Any endometrial or cervical polyp, which can either bleed after sex or can get infected and bleed. You will need a pelvis scan to rule out these and treat them accordingly.

3. Any recent hormonal usage. No treatment is needed.

I feel you are just having an occasional imbalanced cycle. It will get resolved on its own. Just wait for 4 to 6 days, the bleeding should stop, and the next cycle will come as usual. If it does not get resolved, rule out the above causes.

I hope I have clarified your query, do write back if you have more queries.

All the best.

Thank you.
