Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 18 years old, and I have an irregular menstrual cycle. Last year, I had a dark brown-brown discharge for five days.. I took some contraceptive pills to regulate my period. Is it because of that?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

It is common for young women to experience irregular menstrual cycles, especially during adolescence. Various contraceptive methods can help regulate menstrual cycles. Some options commonly used for this purpose include combination birth control pills, progestin-only pills, hormonal IUDs, and contraceptive injections. However, it is crucial to discuss these options with a healthcare provider who can determine the best choice for you based on your specific needs and circumstances. Some general habits may help promote regularity. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Maintain a healthy lifestyle: Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and sufficient sleep can all contribute to overall hormonal balance and regular menstrual cycles.
  2. Manage stress levels: High levels of stress can affect hormonal balance and disrupt menstrual cycles. Engaging in stress management techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, or other relaxation techniques may be helpful.
  3. Track your menstrual cycle: Keeping a record of your menstrual cycles can help you identify any patterns or irregularities. Many apps and online tools are available to assist with tracking.
  4. Maintain a healthy weight: Significant weight fluctuations, whether overweight or underweight, can influence hormonal balance and cause irregular periods. Aim for a healthy weight range to support regular menstrual cycles.
  5. Avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine consumption: These substances can disrupt hormone levels and impact the regularity of menstrual cycles. Moderation is key.
  6. Stay hydrated: Drinking enough water is essential for overall health, including hormonal balance.

I hope this helps. Thank you.
