What causes persistent itching despite normal blood tests?
Patient's Query
Hello Doctor,
I have been experiencing generalized itching all over my body for three to four days. I have been taking Fexofenadine 180 milligrams daily, and the itching has reduced significantly over the last two days. However, I forgot to take Fexofenadine today, and by evening, the itching returned. All my blood test results are normal, except for a slightly elevated bilirubin level. What should I do?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Your total bilirubin is at the borderline level, so there is nothing to worry about. However, your uric acid is high. It is important to visit a doctor in person to rule out gout. Do you have a widespread rash? Is your skin dry? Here is what you can do:
-
Apply Dermocalm lotion (Calamine and Light Liquid Paraffin Lotion) right after your bath every day for one month.
-
Use Cetrimide soap for bathing for one month.
-
Take an Atarax (Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride) 10 milligram tablet at night after dinner for 10 days.
-
Take a Loratadine 10 milligram tablet once a day after breakfast for 10 days.
Possible causes of your itching include dry skin, allergies (atopy), skin infestation, or internal (systemic) issues.
Additional tips:
-
Moisturize your skin often.
-
Use Cetyl Alcohol twice daily for one month.
-
Reduce exposure to things that irritate your skin.
-
Avoid extreme weather conditions.
-
Drink plenty of water.
-
Eat foods rich in antioxidants, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins A and C.
-
Avoid hot showers; use lukewarm water instead.

Patient's Query
Hello Doctor,
I think I have very dry skin, which could be causing the itching. Should I stop taking Allegra 180 milligrams and start using the other medicines instead? Can applying coconut oil to my body also help?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Yes, dry skin can cause itching. You should start using Venusia lotion (moisturizing lotion) after your bath every day for one month, and use Cetyl Alcohol soap for bathing during this time. You can begin the other recommended medications as well. Applying coconut oil may help to some extent, but over time, it might make your skin drier.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
Patient's Query
Hello Doctor,
The medicine Atarax (Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride) is not available here, as I am traveling to another country. Is there any other generic name of medicine that I can take other than Atarax? Fexofenadine 180 milligrams is not very useful this time. It is not affecting, so I need something strong to stop the itching.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
If you experience itching, take Tablet Levocetirizine 5 milligrams twice daily after food for 10 days, or Tablet Loratadine 10 milligrams once daily after breakfast for 10 days. Moisturize your skin frequently using Venusia lotion (moisturizing lotion), apply it after your bath and again in the evening for one month. If available, apply Atarax (Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride) lotion at night on the itchy areas twice a week for six weeks. Use Moiz soap if your skin is dry. If itching continues, use Ketostar or Cetrimide soap while bathing for one month.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
