Can sudden redness and swelling in one eye be dangerous?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My right eye has suddenly become red, itchy, and watery, and it appears swollen and slightly smaller than usual.

I have a history of medical conditions, and the symptoms started abruptly; I feel it may be due to body overheating.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Based on your description, redness, itching, watery discharge, and swelling of the right eye are most commonly suggestive of conjunctivitis (eye inflammation). This can be allergic or viral, or, less commonly, this can also be caused by bacterial infections.

The presence of itching and watery discharge strongly points toward an allergic or viral cause, especially in the absence of thick yellow-green discharge. Eyelid swelling can occur due to inflammation and frequent rubbing of the eye.

Less commonly, these symptoms may result from eye strain, exposure to dust or smoke, or mild eyelid inflammation such as blepharitis. Heat and environmental factors can also worsen irritation in sensitive eyes.

At this stage, you can do the following that can help you with recovery:

  1. Avoid touching or rubbing the eye.

  2. Wash your hands frequently.

  3. Do not share towels or pillows.

  4. You may gently clean the eye with clean water or saline and apply a cold compress to reduce redness and swelling.

Most importantly, seek medical attention if you develop severe eye pain, blurred vision, light sensitivity, or thick discharge, or if symptoms do not improve within one to two days. An ophthalmologist may then prescribe appropriate eye drops after examination.

I hope this information helps you.

Thank you.
