How can I get relief from red and itchy eyes with discharge?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My left eye gets really red and itchy, and it has this foreign, white, stringy thing that I find on my eyelid a lot. Eye drops and allergy medications are not helping.
Please suggest.
What can be done to get relief from this eye problem?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query and can understand your concern.
The way you describe it, red, itchy, stringy white discharge that comes and goes with farm activity, it does sound like an allergic type of conjunctival reaction more than infection. The fact that regular allergy pills and lubricating drops are not helping much suggests it is more persistent.
It can be allergic conjunctivitis flaring up with seasonal triggers like hay cutting, dust, and pollen.
I suggest the following investigations be done: Not always much is needed if symptoms are typical, but an ophthalmologist can do a slit lamp check to rule out chronic allergic eye conditions (like vernal keratoconjunctivitis) or early corneal involvement.
I suggest the following treatment plan for you: Cool compresses over the eyes, avoid rubbing, and use preservative-free lubricating drops frequently. Since regular allergy meds have not helped, you will likely need anti-allergy eye drops (mast cell stabilizers/antihistamine drops), but that needs an ophthalmologist’s prescription after examining you. If it worsens (swelling, pain, blurred vision), do not delay a specialist visit.
Regarding follow-up: Best to update with how often this is flaring up, and whether you have had any blurred vision or light sensitivity. You should also get a direct eye check by an ophthalmologist, since long-standing allergic eye disease can sometimes affect the cornea.
You can take the following preventive measures. Try protective glasses when outdoors or near hay/dust, wash eyes/face with clean water after exposure, keep room air clean and humidified.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
