How to manage penile foreskin redness and itching?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have been recently suffering from redness and itchiness in my penile foreskin. It started about five days back. It is not always itchy, but sometimes it is itchy. Redness is present.
I have been applying Candid cream for the last three days. Symptoms improved until yesterday, but suddenly today it seems redder than the previous day. The problem is present only on the foreskin, with no issues in the glans.
I wear pants for almost eleven to twelve hours straight. There was no problem until now, but this started eight days ago. Please help and prescribe how I should treat this.
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understood your concern.
Inflammation and swelling of the glans penis are visible. It appears to be balanitis. The cause could be improper hygiene, scratching and rubbing, allergic reaction to irritant soap, infectious causes such as yeast infection, chlamydia, fungal infection, herpes, human papillomavirus (HPV), gonorrhea, chancroid, or syphilis.
Other causes include eczema, uncontrolled diabetes, balanitis xerotica obliterans, injuries, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, and exposure to chemicals or fragrance-based lotion or soap use.
Signs and symptoms are pain, tenderness, irritation, erythema, dry foreskin, foul-smelling discharge, and pain on urination. Practice good hygiene, safe sex, and use barriers. A swab test should be done to check for infection.
Most of the time, it is a fungal infection. I suggest you follow these steps:
-
Apply Miconazole cream twice daily in the morning and evening for two weeks.
-
Apply Hydrocortisone gel at night for ten days.
-
Apply Fucidin cream (Fusidic Acid) in the afternoon for ten days.
-
Wash the area with a good cleanser or a no-soap cleanser daily for one month.
-
Keep the area clean and dry as moisture favors fungal growth.
-
Avoid scented soaps and lotions.
-
Always clean the glans penis after retracting the foreskin.
-
Wash with warm water and a no-soap cleanser.
-
Dry the area completely after cleaning.
-
Maintain proper hygiene, as hygiene plays a very important role in avoiding the recurrence of infection.
I hope that this answers your query.
Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.
Thank you.
