Can intrauterine device be effective for more than 10 years?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My fiance has been using a copper IUD (intrauterine device) for the last five years. Is it effective for 8 to 12 years? Since IUD is a effective form of birth control with only a 99 % success rate of working, I do pull out method as a precautionary measure. For now, I do not want kids. She prefers pull out on ovulation days and do not want pull out on non-ovulation days and asks me to go inside her. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

IUD is the most effective and safest contraceptive for 10 years but varies depending on the manufacturer. Pull out method during ovulation should be 100 % effective.
