Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My son has been experiencing joint pain for about four months now. It initially started in his knees and ankles, but now it has spread to his elbows and wrists. In the mornings, he feels very stiff, especially in his knees and wrists, and it takes around 30 minutes for the stiffness to subside. Sometimes, his joints become swollen, and his ankles feel warm. I took him for some blood tests last week, and the results were as follows: his ESR was 45, his CRP was 35, his rheumatoid factor was 60, and his anti-CCP antibodies were 120. The doctor did X-rays of his knees and wrists, but they didn’t show anything serious, just mild swelling. He has also been complaining of feeling very tired and is finding it hard to focus at school. The pain makes it difficult for him to play with his friends and run. I have tried giving him pain relievers like ibuprofen, but they don’t seem to help much. He is 9 years old and weighs about 70 pounds. There is no history of arthritis in our family.
Do you think this could be rheumatoid arthritis, or could it be something else? Should I take him to a specialist or try a different treatment? Additionally, what can I do to help him with his schoolwork while dealing with the pain? Please let me know what steps I should take next.
Please guide.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Thank you for posting your query.
It may be due to juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Early consultation with a pediatric rheumatologist is essential to confirm the diagnosis and begin treatment. Treatment may include disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) like methotrexate or biologics to control inflammation and prevent joint damage. Ibuprofen alone is insufficient. Physical therapy can help improve mobility, while accommodations at school can ease academic challenges.
Encouraging light, low-impact activities and maintaining a healthy weight can support joint health. Early intervention is crucial for improving his quality of life and long-term outcomes.
Please let me know if you want some help.
Thank you.
