Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 27-year-old. I have had JRA since the age of six. I have been wheelchair-bound since age nine. I have restricted movement and severe deformities in many joints. I am not on any medication except Brufen, a painkiller. I have stopped treatment for many years as there was no progress. Will light physiotherapy or stretching exercises help in the movement and flexibility of stiff joints?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. Having chronic immobility due to arthritis leads to frequent joint contractures. Minor surgical procedures can help these. If there is no contracture, then physiotherapy will help. But if joints are damaged, then surgery is required. However, physiotherapy should be started at the earliest. Also, disease progress needs to be assessed, and if it is active, then proper treatment is required. If you regularly need painkillers, then you have to get treatment for arthritis.

Thank you.
