Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Before giving birth, my sister started limping. After delivery, her condition worsened, and now she is mainly confined to bed. Please help.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
The onset of limping during pregnancy that worsened after delivery and has now left her bedridden is certainly concerning. Several possible causes need to be considered. One possibility is nerve compression, such as from a herniated disc or a nerve injury during childbirth.
Another potential cause could be a musculoskeletal issue involving the pelvis or hips, like sacroiliac joint dysfunction (pain and limited movement caused by abnormal motion or inflammation of the sacroiliac joint) or transient osteoporosis of the hip (temporary bone loss in the hip causing sudden pain and weakness, usually resolving on its own), which can occur during late pregnancy and worsen postpartum.
A less common but important condition to consider is postpartum femoral neuropathy, which can lead to weakness and difficulty walking.
Your sister must undergo a thorough medical evaluation as soon as possible. This should include neurological and orthopedic assessments and imaging studies such as an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the spine and pelvis to help pinpoint the cause.
If possible, please also share more details, including her height, weight, and whether she had a vaginal or cesarean delivery. These details can provide valuable context in determining the cause and the best treatment path. Early diagnosis and appropriate management will be key to improving her condition and helping her regain mobility.
I hope this helps.
Kindly revert so I can assist you further.
Thank you.
