Is Levofloxacin safe during pregnancy?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have been prescribed Levofloxacin for five days during my 13th week of pregnancy to treat a UTI. I am sensitive to Levofloxacin and mildly sensitive to Nitrofurantoin. My doctor assured me that it was safe since it had only been for five days, but I felt stressed about it. Please help.
Thank you in advance.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common during pregnancy, affecting about eight percent of pregnant women. These infections can range from asymptomatic bacteriuria (presence of bacteria in the urine) to symptomatic acute cystitis (a sudden inflammation of the bladder). UTIs during pregnancy have been linked to adverse outcomes, including preterm delivery and low birth weight.
Since you are pregnant, I suggest taking third-generation Cephalosporin:
- Cefixime 400 mg tablet – Take twice a day for seven days.
- Cran-Max sachet (cranberry powder extract)– Take twice a day for 20 days, mixed with one glass of water.
These medications are safe during pregnancy and will effectively treat your UTI.
- Additionally, take Iberet Folic (Ferrous Sulfate 100 mg, Folic acid 1 mg, vitamin C 50 mg) once a day until delivery to support your health.
Kindly consult your doctor and take medicines accordingly.
I recommend scheduling an obstetric ultrasound at the following stages:
- 13 weeks.
- 18 to 22 weeks.
- 28 weeks.
- 32 weeks.
- 34 weeks.
- 36 weeks.
Be sure to maintain regular antenatal check-ups with your obstetrician and complete baseline investigations, including:
- Blood group and cross-matching.
- Full blood count (FBC).
- Fasting blood sugar.
- Viral markers (HBsAg or hepatitis B surface antigen, Anti-HCV or anti-hepatitis C virus).
I hope this helps.
Kindly revert so I can assist you further.
Thank you.
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Thank you for your reply.
I had a urine culture done, and the results show that I am only sensitive to Levofloxacin and Nitrofurantoin, so I cannot take Cefixime.
Thank you.
