Are allergic reactions to medicines dangerous for children?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son had an allergic reaction about 24 hours ago. He took homeopathic medicine to help relieve his cold symptoms, and his lips swelled up very badly. There were no other symptoms. He took 50 mg of Diphenhydramine last night, and the swelling is almost gone today.

  1. What do I do now?
  2. Does he need emergency care?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

Please check the following:

  1. Difficulty in breathing: Are there any wheezing or abnormal sounds when he breathes?
  2. Did he sleep well after the swelling occurred?
  3. Any difficulty swallowing: Is he eating normally?

If everything seems fine, please take him to your physician within the next few days. If any of these issues are present, consider it an emergency. If it is not an emergency, you can review it with me as well.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
