Can lipomas be left untreated?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have more of a question regarding something odd that I have had for a long time. I have some small, hard round object on my stomach (a little below and to the right of my belly button) and I had this for at least more than five years now. It has never bothered me in any way and is barely visible and has no special color. It is feeling a little weird if you press it harder, but I never really pressed too hard on it. Is it something that I should get checked up upon?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The description you have provided of a small swelling on the abdominal wall sounds like a lipoma. A lipoma is a lump of fatty tissue that grows just under the skin. Lipomas move easily when you touch them and feel rubbery, not hard. Most lipomas are not painful and do not cause health problems, so they rarely need treatment.

Investigations to be done

Investigations are usually not necessary. An ultrasound of the abdomen can diagnose the condition.

Treatment plan

Treatment is usually not necessary for a lipoma. However, if the lipoma bothers you, is painful, or is growing, you can get it removed either by surgical excision or liposuction. Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
