Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 40-year-old woman scheduled for lung cancer surgery and occasionally use marijuana.
Does marijuana always worsen post-surgical lung recovery in cancer resection patients at 40?
In simple terms, could it affect healing, increase infection risk, or complicate breathing after surgery?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com
I have read your query and understand your concern.
I am really sorry you are going through this situation. It is completely natural to feel worried before lung surgery, and your concern is very valid.
Marijuana smoke, like any kind of smoke, can irritate the airways and lungs. After lung cancer surgery, the lungs are already healing from anesthesia, surgical handling, and reduced lung capacity. Because of this, exposure to smoke during recovery can make healing more difficult.
Marijuana does not always worsen recovery in every patient, but it can increase the chances of certain problems. Smoking may irritate the airways, increase cough and mucus production, and make breathing exercises after surgery more uncomfortable. These factors can slightly increase the risk of complications such as infection, delayed lung expansion, or a persistent cough.
Smoking of any type can also affect oxygen exchange and increase airway inflammation, both of which are important during the healing phase after lung surgery. For proper recovery, the lungs need a clean environment so that the remaining lung tissue can expand and function well.
In my experience, patients who avoid smoking before and after surgery tend to recover more smoothly and have fewer breathing-related problems compared to those who continue smoking.
It is best to avoid marijuana smoking completely before and after surgery to support better healing and recovery.
I hope I have addressed your concerns. Please feel free to follow up anytime. Wishing you a smooth surgery and a healthy recovery.
Thank you.
