How to prevent malaria?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor.

I am a 30-year-old male. My neighbor is suffering from malaria, and I am afraid that I might also get infected. How can I protect myself and my family members from contracting malaria? Is there a recommended vaccination for malaria? If such a vaccination exists, please provide information about it.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Malaria is a serious infectious disease caused by a parasite that is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. It is understandable to be concerned about contracting the disease when someone in your vicinity is affected. Here are some ways to protect yourself and your family members from malaria:

Use mosquito repellent: Apply mosquito repellent that contains DEET(N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) or Picaridin (insect repellent) to exposed skin, especially during the hours when mosquitoes are most active (dusk to dawn).

Wear protective clothing: Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks to cover as much skin as possible, reducing the risk of mosquito bites.

Use mosquito nets: Sleep under a mosquito net treated with insecticide, as this can provide additional protection against mosquito bites.

Eliminate stagnant water: Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so remove any stagnant water around your home or workplace.

Take antimalarial medication: If you are traveling to a region with a high risk of malaria, your doctor may prescribe antimalarial medication as a preventive measure.

Unfortunately, there is currently no widely available and approved vaccine against malaria for general use, but ongoing research is being conducted to develop an effective vaccine. Therefore, taking the above precautions is essential in protecting yourself and your family members from malaria.

Thank you.
