Can melatonin gummies help fix sleep schedules?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 18 years old. I am currently struggling to fall asleep quickly. I want to sleep around 12 and wake up at around six or seven, but I can not fall asleep at 12, it always ends up being 2 am, and I wake up late. I have heard that melatonin gummies give good results. Can I take one 2 mg melatonin gummy before sleep every day or just on some days of the week?
Please advise.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concerns.
While I can offer some guidance, it is always best to consult a doctor before starting any supplement, including melatonin. Melatonin is generally considered safe for short-term use, and a 2 mg dose is relatively low. However, taking it daily may not be necessary. You can try using it for a few days to reset your sleep cycle and then gradually reduce the frequency.
Tips to fix your sleep schedule without relying on melatonin:
- Maintain a consistent sleep schedule: Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends.
- Limit screen time: Reduce blue light exposure from phones, laptops, and televisions at least one hour before bed.
- Create a relaxing night routine: Try activities like reading, meditation, or deep breathing exercises to wind down.
- Reduce stimulants: Avoid caffeine and heavy meals four to six hours before bedtime.
- Increase natural light exposure: Get sunlight exposure during the day, especially in the morning, to regulate your sleep-wake cycle.
Using melatonin effectively:
- Take 2 milligrams of melatonin about 30 to 60 minutes before bed for a few days to help reset your sleep cycle.
- Once your sleep improves, use melatonin only as needed to avoid developing a daily dependency.
If your sleep issues persist for several weeks despite trying these changes, it is best to consult a doctor to rule out any underlying conditions.
Thank you.
